C.P. Hoyt was the warden of the Colorado State Prison during three different terms spanning the period 1883–1900. This album presented here represents his work during these three terms and was donated to the Cañon City Local History Center by his descendents. These photographs provide insight into the events and practices that shaped the Colorado state prison system during its early history.

Cellhouse One Cellhouse One. Albumen photograph inside Colorado State Penitentiary shows Cellhouse One in middle ground; the rough-coursed stone building is 170 x 44 feet and 28 feet high; holds 42 double cells and 120 single cells; a center bay window has 3 arched windows, double-hung, with arched transoms; windows on the lower level are very tall, segmented, arched, double-hung, 9 over 9, with transoms; windows on the upper level are short, segmented, double-hung; all windows are barred; a portion of the main building shows at left with ladder leaning against building; foreground of photo shows the walled Cañon City Hydraulic Ditch running from left to right; behind it is Warden C. Main Building Main Building. Albumen photograph inside Colorado State Penitentiary shows the main building in center of the photo; the two-story rough coursed stone building was built in 1871; 1882 is carved on stone voussours set in an arch above the window bays in the front facing gable; all windows on first and second level are arched and of equal size; they are double-hung; basement windows are rectangular; all windows are barred; the large arched doorway is also barred; building was 190 feet x 43 feet; foreground shows ditch and small bridge leading across to entrance of main building; bridge has carved stone railings and posts; stone planters are at the base of the steps; utility wires run past building and poles placed on each side of building; hills in background; man in foreground; man in second story left window; ladder leaning on right corner of building; Cellhouse 2 is visible at left; about 1898-1900.

Albumen photograph of Colorado State Penitentiary storeroom; photograph shows food stored in sacks, boxes, barrels and cans lined up along stone wall; square wood beams supporting walls and ceiling; flooring is wooden planks with spaces between for ventilation; there are "Ivory Soap" boxes, barrels of coffee, Yellow Mill Flour sacks and apples in boxes on the bottom shelf; ads for Lion Coffee and Dunham Coffee are tacked up; about 1898-1900.

Old Gray Mare Old Gray Mare. Albumen photograph of Colorado State Penitentiary's Old Gray Mare; four unidentified men are standing in yard watching a prisoner being punished by a fifth man; one of the men would have been a physician; the old gray mare, an "A" shaped wood frame, was used to punish prisoners; prisoners were sentenced to a number of wacks on the back side for breaking prison rules; the paddle was of leather with metal brads; it was dipped in water before use; stone wall and side of stone building visible; about 1898-1900.

Lock Step Lock Step. Albumen photograph of Colorado State Penitentiary shows prisoners walking in "lock step" in foreground accompanied by guard; a mode of marching by a body of men going one after another as closely as possible, in which the leg of each man moves at the same time with the corresponding leg of the person before him; hydraulic ditch passes to left central building in background; prisoners were moved about the complex in single file, arms crossed and left hand on the shoulder of the man in front of him; guard walked to the back and side to keep a close eye on this movement; about 1898-1900.
